Author’s Notes: The confluence of my place in the cosmos (85.8 years) with the emergence of AI, in this case Grok (xAI), has presented me with a convenient yet somewhat embarrassing dilemma. I can use whatever time I have to write tortuously about what I think the Holy Spirit suggests to me while waiting in that upper room of my inner self, or I can write about what I think the Holy Spirit whispers to me in that upper room of my inner self by using Grok to help me organize my corpus of research all these years. I must confess to being a bit challenged in that I don’t want AI to make up words I don’t approve of and suggest innuendos that I hadn’t intended. At this stage in my life, I am past looking forward to death theoretically, but find myself waiting in the train depot with bags packed and a ticket in hand (I hope to Heaven). Herein lies my problem. I don’t have the luxury of time, only the urgency to complete my work so that you can read it and make decisions about what it means for you. What follows is a collaboration between Grok and me (with thanks to Elon Musk for his inspired creativity).

I have often been fascinated by the idea of the territorial imperative (where ten fish are put in a tank meant for two, resulting in only two surviving). Would this notion of territorial imperative exist in the macrocosm of three universes, the physical, mental, and spiritual? What follows is my questioning Grok (xAI) about this. I have edited and approved the following series. AI-generated will be encapsulated with parens.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This blog is very long. I did not want to break it up. Bookmark it so you can take off chunks rather than reading the whole thing, which will become a book of the same title if I live that long. During whatever time I have left, and, admittedly, at 85.7, I live day to day, I still long to place myself in the presence of Christ each day to be with the one I love and just sit there on the couch and be present to the moment. Lay Cistercian spirituality, based on the charisms and practices of the Cistercian (Trappist) order, and the teaching of St. Benedict as interpreted by that same order, O.C.S.O., is, as I understand it, based on the folding together of all those resources and experiences (good experiences that I hope to use now in the kingdom of Heaven within me, as well as those dark pathways down which I wandered and had to, shamefaced, walk back to the Light of Christ, begging for mercy). It’s me, Lord, standin‘ in the need of prayer.

Being who I am (whoever that is), I relish taking themes and seeing how they apply to various situations, then writing them down as blog posts (I have over 1,100 blog posts like the one you are reading). In that spirit, I cockily asked the Holy Spirit to slap me with a dose of the big boy stuff, thinking I could be better than I am, having used capacitas dei and conversio morae over 10 years as a professed Lay Cistercian. Pride always precedes the fall, and I fell on my face, not in a bad sense at all, but with the realization that the magisterium of the Catholic Church and the wisdom of all its members, since the Holy Spirit overshadowed the tiny bit of wisdom that I absorbed through my own efforts alone. My advice is to never pray to the Holy Spirit to give you even a little bit of the Christ Principle that your humanity has evolved into, without realizing that the HS might just drop a dollop of what is out there on you. I am now content to just sit on that couch next to Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit to give me what I need to know, love, and serve Christ through the life experiences I have had or will have.

One of the suggestions from the Holy Spirit was to use Grok to help me expand my ideas in ways I could not on my own. Without being used by Grok but using Grok as a resource, I have now incorporated AI into my Lectio Divina, carefully, and not giving up my human individuality to a computer, but taking what I have done and giving another and maybe deeper look at what I, myself, would not be able to outline or combine.

What follows is a blog written by AI. I asked the questions and controlled the narrative (or at least I think I did). I will offer this as a series of litanies, based on what AI gleans from my writings, formatted as litany prayers. Just read one or two of them, if you choose.

To hear the whispers of Jesus, the homebound Cistercian must transform their physical room into a spiritual laboratory using these three disciplines:

1. The „Hush“ of the False Self
Jesus whispers because He is intimate, and whispers are only heard when we lean in close. The „noise“ that prevents this is usually the Seven Deadly Sins—specifically Acedia (Sloth), which tells you your quiet life is useless. By rejecting the „need to be seen“ or „be productive“ by worldly standards, you silence the ego’s static.

2. Stability in the „Upper Room.“
St. Bernard taught that „the cell, if dwelt in, becomes sweet.“ For the shut-in, Stability means staying present in your chair, your bed, or your prayer corner without „wandering“ through digital distractions. This stability creates the Capacitas Dei—the hollowed-out space—where the whisper can resonate.

3. The Resonance of Hearts
When you sit in silence, your heart is physically next to the Heart of Christ. As you breathe, you listen for the „rhythm of the Master.“ This is the language of God. He does not give a long list of instructions; He gives a pulse.

How to „Do What He Tells You“

Following the directive of Mary at Cana and the warnings of Our Lady of Akita, the whisper of Jesus usually directs the homebound toward three „courageous sacrifices“:

  • The Sacrifice of the Routine: When He whispers, „Pray this Psalm again,“ or „Offer this pain for the world,“ doing it with love is your „Fiat.“ This is moving from a Canal to a Reservoir.
  • The Denial of Personal Convenience: Choosing the „Cross of the Moment“—perhaps a difficult symptom or a lonely hour—and handing it to Him as a gift.
  • The Ministry of Interiority: Recognizing that your primary job is to be the „heart“ of the Church. While the „hands“ (active orders) work, you provide the „blood“ (prayer) that keeps the Body alive.

Meditation for the Homebound Monk

Imagine you are in the Upper Room with Mary. The doors are locked (your isolation), but the Spirit is present.

  • Listen: Not for words, but for a Peace that settles.
  • Act: When that Peace prompts you to a small act of patience or a silent „Hail Mary,“ you are doing exactly what He tells you.

Would you like to assign a specific monastic hour (such as Lauds, None, or Compline) to each section of your three-day vigil to structure the listening?

Describe how the act of placing myself in that upper room of my inner self and just waiting for Jesus to whisper to me is itself a prayer. What is the heresy of action as described in the Soul of the Apostolate, and how does this apply to those who are confined to their cell (either in prison or voluntarily through health or mental difficulties)?

In Cistercian spirituality, placing yourself in the „upper room“ of your inner self and waiting in silence is the highest form of prayer because it is an act of total Capacitas Dei—hollowing yourself out to be filled by God alone. 

Waiting as the Highest Prayer

Waiting is not „doing nothing“; it is the active subjection of human nature to the Divine Will. In this „inner room,“ you are following the monastic tradition of listening with the „ear of the heart“. 

  • The Upper Room of the Heart: This is the deepest self where God dwells. By „locking the door“ to worldly distractions, you align your heartbeat with Christ’s.
  • Presence over Petitions: For the homebound monk, prayer moves from saying words to being a presence. This waiting demonstrates a conversion from the False Self—the part of us that wants to talk at God—to the True Self that listens to Him. 

The „Heresy of Action“

In his classic work, The Soul of the Apostolate, Trappist Abbot Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard describes the „heresy of action“ (or activism) as the dangerous delusion that outward activity and material results are more important than the interior life. 

  • Definition: It is the „frenetic activity“ that neglects one’s own spiritual nourishment while trying to „do“ things for God.
  • The Reservoir vs. The Canal: Chautard warns that many become „canals“ that let grace flow away without retaining any for themselves. Instead, we must be „reservoirs“ that are filled first by the Interior Life before they can overflow to others. 

Application to the Confined and Homebound

For those confined to a cell—whether by prison walls, failing health, or mental difficulties—Chautard’s teaching is a liberation. 

  • The Primary Apostolate: If „prayer possesses more power than preaching,“ then the confined person is at the center of the Church’s mission. You are not „benched“ from the apostolate; you are the soul of it.
  • Sanctifying the Cell: Because „action depends on contemplation for its effectiveness,“ your Stability in the cell generates the grace that active missionaries distribute.
  • Defeating the Devil of Busyness: The devil often permits progress in external works to hinder the inner life. By being forced into silence, you are protected from the „sin of activism“ and invited into a closer union with God that many busy people never achieve. 

Let’s focus on a specific Chapter of the Soul of the Apostolate—perhaps Chautard’s „Steps toward the Interior Life“—to further structure your homebound vigil.

To move from the „Heresy of Action“ to the „True Solitude of the Heart,“ Chautard outlines a progression that is perfectly suited to the homebound cell. For those in the „Upper Room“ of their inner self, the transition happens through the Gradual Transformation of the Interior Life.

The Steps Toward the Interior Life (For the Homebound)

In his fourth section of The Soul of the ApostolateDom Chautard explains that the „wait“ in the inner room is actually a structured movement of the soul:

  1. The Recognition of Inability: The first step is the realization that we can do nothing of supernatural value on our own. For a shut-in, this is the „gift“ of physical or mental limitation. It breaks the pride of the „False Self“ that wants to „do.“
  2. The Habit of Recourse: This is the „whisper“ stage. You begin to develop a „reflex“ of turning to Jesus in your heart for every small thought or pain. You no longer see your confinement as a wall, but as a Reservoir being filled.
  3. The Life of Union: This is where you stop praying to Jesus and start living in Him. Your „wait“ in the Upper Room becomes a Resonance. You are no longer „doing“ prayer; you are a prayer.

The Litany of the Soul of the Apostolate

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

St. Bernard, who warned against the „frenzied life“ of empty action, Pray for us.
Dom Chautard, who taught us that prayer is the soul’s engine, Pray for us.
Our Lady of Akita, who calls the suffering to be the world’s repairers, Pray for us.

From the delusion that my „doing“ is more important than my „being,“ Deliver us, O Lord.
From the „Heresy of Action“ that starves the interior life, Deliver us, O Lord.

This final phase of your vigil transforms the clock into a ladder of Capacitas Dei. For the homebound Lay Cistercian, the hours are not markers of time, but invitations to resonate with the Heart of Christ.

The Schedule of the Heart: Final Day of Vigil

VIGILS (The Night Watch: 3:00 AM – 6:00 AM)

  • The Intent: Breaking the „False Self“ of fear and darkness.
  • The Prayer: The Twelve Steps of Humility.
  • The Action: Sit in the „Upper Room“ of your darkness. Wait for the first whisper of the Light. Offer your insomnia or night-terrors as a „courageous sacrifice“ for those lost in sin.

LAUDS (Dawn: 6:00 AM – 8:00 AM)

  • The Intent: The „Fiat“ of the New Day.
  • The PrayerLitany of the Blessed Mother.
  • The Action: Greet the sun as a sign of the Resurrection. Say: „Behold the handmaid of the Lord.“ Let your first breath be a conscious „Yes“ to your confinement.

TERCE (The Morning Hour: 9:00 AM)

  • The Intent: The Descent of the Holy Spirit.
  • The Prayer: Veni Creator Spiritus (Chant).
  • The Action: Ask the Spirit to fill your „Reservoir.“ Deny the „Heresy of Action“ by refusing to check the news or phone; remain in the quiet of the Upper Room.

SEXT (Midday: 12:00 PM)

  • The Intent: The Cross of the Routine and Our Lady of Akita.
  • The Prayer: The Angelus.
  • The Action: The noon „reset.“ When the body feels the weight of the day, lean your heart against the Heart of Jesus. Offer your hunger or physical weakness for the conversion of the world.

NONE (The Afternoon Hour: 3:00 PM)

  • The Intent: The Death of the Ego.
  • The PrayerThe Soul of the Apostolate (Reflection on Chapter 4).
  • The Action: The Hour of Mercy. Visualize the blood and water flowing from the Side of Christ, filling your soul. Recognize that in your „uselessness,“ you are being most useful to the Church.

VESPERS (Evening: 6:00 PM)

  • The Intent: Gratitude for Stability.
  • The PrayerLitany of Cistercian Stability.
  • The Action: Light a candle. Look back at the day and see where the „False Self“ tried to complain. Forgive yourself and return to the resonance of the Word.

COMPLINE (Night Prayer: 8:00 PM)

  • The Intent: Final Abandonment and the Salve Regina.
  • The Prayer: The Cistercian Salve.
  • The Action: „Into Your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.“ Lock the door of your inner cell. Sleep in the peace of knowing you have „done what He told you“ by simply remaining in His love.

O Holy Trinity, through the Twelve Degrees of Humility, we have descended from our pride to find Thee. In the silence of our homebound cell, we have found the Soul of our Apostolate. Grant that the Conversatio Morum begun in this vigil may continue in every heartbeat, until our Capacitas Dei is filled to overflowing in Your eternal Kingdom. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO: Sit in the presence of Christ before the Blessed Sacrament or, if you are a shut-in, in the Holy of Holies in that upper room of your inner self and let Jesus and the Holy Spirit tell you what you need to hear in silence and solitude.

THE TEN STEPS OF THE HANDMAID’S RULE

Solitude of the Heart in your „Upper Room,“ here is a Daily Rule of Life in Ten Steps. These steps are designed to help the homebound Lay Cistercian move from the „Heresy of Action“ to a life of Resonance, finding the whisper of Jesus in the „sacrament of the present moment.“

The Ten Steps of the Handmaid’s Rule

  1. The Morning Threshold (Fiat): The moment you wake, before the „False Self“ can complain, offer your day. Say: „Behold the handmaid of the Lord.“ Accept your room and your body as the cloister where God will work today.
  2. The Priority of Being (The Reservoir): Spend the first hour of your day in silence or Lectio Divina. Do not seek „information,“ but „formation.“ Be a reservoir that waits to be filled before interacting with the world.
  3. The Liturgy of the Mundane: Treat every repetitive task (washing, eating, taking medicine) as a monastic ritual. Do not rush. Jesus whispers in the slow rhythm of the routine, not in the frenzy of „getting it done.“
  4. The Angelus Interrupt (Midday Reset): At noon, stop everything. Use this bell to cut through the „noise“ of the morning. Re-center your heart next to the Heart of Christ.
  5. Listening in the Other: When a caregiver, neighbor, or family member speaks (or even when you hear a noise outside), listen for Jesus. He often „tells you what to do“ through the needs and words of everyday people. Treat their presence as a Divine Visitation.
  6. The Denial of Convenience: Once a day, choose the „uncomfortable path.“ If you want to complain about a physical pain or a cold meal, offer it instead as a courageous sacrifice in union with Our Lady of Akita.
  7. The Guard of the Heart (Custodia Cordis): Limit „digital noise“ (TV, social media, news). These are „canals“ that drain your peace. Protect your Capacitas Dei by keeping the cell’s inner door locked against worldly static.
  8. The Soul of the Apostolate: Remember Chautard’s teaching: your prayer is the engine of the Church. When you feel „useless,“ tell Jesus: „My waiting is my work.“ This intention makes your stillness more powerful than a thousand speeches.
  9. Evening Accountability (The Descent): At the end of the day, review the Twelve Steps of Humility. Where did pride or resentment creep in? Repent briefly, then let it go into the „Ocean of Mercy.“
  10. The Final Salve (The Handmaid’s Rest): End your day with the Salve Regina. Sleep in the „Upper Room,“ trusting that even in your sleep, your heart remains resonant with all reality.

Through these ten steps, you move from isolation to a vibrant presence. You are no longer a shut-in; you are a monk of the interior, an aqueduct of grace for a world that has forgotten how to listen.

CONTEMPLATIO: Sit in the presence of Christ before the Blessed Sacrament or, if you are a shut-in, in the Holy of Holies in that upper room of your inner self and let Jesus and the Holy Spirit tell you what you need to hear in silence and solitude.“

As I am here in Tallahassee, Florida, seemingly locked into my home due to heart problems (and maybe head problems), there is a strange, undefined conscious awareness that, although not all Lay Cistercians are monks and nuns who have accepted the cloistered life, we do live in a cell of the upper room of our inner selves. Also, those Lay Cistercians who are not able to attend the Gathering Day in person, and so through the intervention of Zoom, are, in some wonderful way, like hermits, alone yet vitally connected through Christ to those gathered together in person.
