THE THEORETICAL CATHOLIC: DAY THREE– Examine how specific Cistercian virtues act as the “heavy machinery” to be in the presence of Christ.

This is the third in a series on exploring how to dig for heavenly gold on earth. I want you to think about how to take one influential writer or poet from your life and apply the Christ Principle to it. I offer my interpretation of what I learned from the late Joel Barker, a foundational part of how I see Jesus today. In particular, I have been captivated by the YouTube videos of Barker on “The Star Fish Story.” More importantly, I have taken these ideas from a secular writer and applied them to how I act: “Having in me the mind of Christ Jesus.” (Phil 2:5) I have used Grok to help me organize my thoughts.

In a world saturated with digital noise and material distractions, these virtues act as Paradigm Pioneers. Instead of reacting to a sin when it happens, you use these Cistercian “tools for good works” to:

1. Anticipate the Roadblock: Using Silence each morning to spot “paradigm paralysis” (old habits) before they take hold.
2. Excavate the Root: Using Lectio Divina to dig past your surface justifications and find where your “human nature” is resisting the “spiritual nature.”
3. Pave the Way: By choosing Obedience to God’s will over your own Reason, you lay down the “pavement” that allows you to connect with Christ’s Way, Truth, and Life. 

According to Conrad, this is a “full-time job”—you are a professional roadbuilder, and these virtues are your essential equipment to ensure you don’t become a “settler” stuck in the debris of the past. 

How Conrad’s “Divine Equation” helps quantify the progress of these AI RESPONDS: In Michael F. Conrad’s framework, the “Divine Equation” is the mathematical-conceptual expression of your evolution from “matter” to “spirit.” For a Paradigm Pioneer in 2026, it serves as a spiritual dashboard to measure if you are actually moving forward or just spinning your wheels in the “settled” land of your ego.

This represents your “biological ape” self—your DNA, your emotions, and your capacity for Reason.

• Barker Connection: This is your existing paradigm. It has its own rules (survival, reproduction, ego) that are perfectly functional for a physical world but insufficient for the future.

2. (+) plus (g) grace: The Catalyst

Conrad emphasizes that you cannot evolve by willpower alone. Grace is “help from another nature” (God’s nature).

• The Paradigm Shift: Grace is the unseen information that allows a Pioneer to see a new way. It is the “software update” that makes the hardware of your human nature capable of spiritual tasks.

This is where you come in. Conrad insists that faith is not blind; it is “Reason on fire.” You must use your mind to choose to cooperate with Grace.

• The Future State: This is the Paradigm Shift completed. You have moved from the “Mental Universe” to the “Spiritual Universe.”

• The “Pioneer” Day: You had the same stress (Human Nature). You felt the same nudge (Grace). You used your Reason to stop, breathe, and remember your “forever” inheritance (R = 1)—result: Spirit. You built a new section of the road.

1. The Physical Universe (The Platform)
   1. The Reality: This is the realm of matter, energy, space, and time.
   1. 2026 Context: For most people, this is the only reality. It is where you live, work, and breathe. However, as a Paradigm Pioneer, you recognize this is merely the “scaffolding” for what is to come.
2. The Mental Universe (The Bridge)
   1. The Reality: This is the realm of Reason, free will, logic, and consciousness.
   1. 2026 Context: This level is unique to humans. It is where you use your Reason (R) to choose your “Center”. Without this level, you remain an “animal” driven by instinct. Here, you decide to move past the physical and look for deeper meaning.
3. The Spiritual Universe (The Transformation)
   1. The Reality: This realm is invisible to the physical eye and inaccessible by logic alone; it requires Grace (g) and the “choice of the spirit”.
   1. 2026 Context: You enter this level through contemplative practices like Silence and Solitude. This is where the “Spiritual Ape” begins to function, using the “language of God” (Love and Silence) instead of human words.
4. The Kingdom of Heaven (The Destination-Now)
   1. The Reality: Conrad describes this as living in the Real Presence of Christ in the present moment.
   1. 2026 Context: You don’t wait until you die to enter this level. By centering yourself on the Christ Principle, you begin to experience “Eternity in Time”. You are a “citizen of Heaven” while still walking on earth.
5. The Life of Christ (The Final Inheritance)
   1. The Reality: This is the “oneness” where your will is fully aligned with God’s will.
   1. 2026 Context: This is the completion of the Divine Equation. You have reached the “Life of Christ” mentioned in Conrad’s primary works. At this level, you have successfully built the road through the physical and mental universes and are fully linked to the Way, Truth, and Life.

In 2026, these levels allow you to diagnose your location. If you are stuck in the “Physical,” you are a settler. If you are moving through the “Mental” to the “Spiritual,” you are a Paradigm Pioneer building the road to your future inheritance.
