Humans strain to break free of this landlocked, rocky ball of gas and chemicals by reaching out for the stars. I don’t recall who said this (but I did not), but during one of my Lectio Divina meditations, someone asked me why humans would foolishly reach for the stars, and the response was, “Because they are there!”
There is something ingrained in the very DNA of each molecule that propels all reality (humans are just along for the ride) toward more complexity (See the attached Teilhard de Chardin map, which is unattributed.).
This idea of a Grant Archetype, not limited to the limitations humans face on earth (death, dependent upon oxygen and temperature variations), is an interesting one that has escaped my thought progressions so far. Think of it, what we know about the mortality and requirements for human life (all life for that matter) to keep breathing depends on what we can observe about the environment around us, and in particular, our adaptation to the timeframe each of us pops onto that merry-go-round of time until we get off. Life goes on, and like Lemmings, matter continues its inescapable, seemingly suicidal rush to something out there we cannot see. What I can see through my experiences (I pick up reality like a lint collector collects dirt) tells me that all these YouTube segments about space and how humans will someday be on Mars are missing the big picture and a crucial variable for humans to exist outside of our Earth. I refer to that innocuous and often ignored reality that is part of the fabric of each human’s time on earth, original sin.
WHAT IF…
Here are some of my hypotheses about The Grand Architype and how scientists and space engineers may not have considered original sin (humanity’s flawed nature) as one variable that prevents or at least complicates space travel. I only have to look around me right now, watching YouTube segments on television, to know that all is not right or perfect about the myriad ways humans live out their lives.
What if humans don’t or can’t adjust to gravity without the safety of Earth to sustain them?
What if…humans steal, rape, are alcoholics, are pedophiles, become paranoid, drift into a coma, get angry, and become dominant with revenge, are homeless and addicted to drugs, get cancer, fail to upgrade their equipment and social etiquette, commit fornication, adultery, sodomy, or worse, accept the premise that what is Evil is good for everyone. What I am describing is original sin. God set boundaries for humans to allow them to at least weave and wobble down the road of life that leads to a deeper humanity.
The Grand Archetype pertains not just to Earth, but everywhere in all galaxies, in universes that spiral into other universes, in the lifeforms on all other planets, with sentient beings (as we understand humans to be) and higher intelligence beings.
The YouTube segments show the idyllic humans colonizing Mars, the Moon, and beyond, yet humans have yet to win the battle over original sin. We humans (all of us) have certain parameters of physical reality, which shape reality. Our individual reality must conform to that greater Archetype (see Teilhard map above), not be in dissonance with what is.
Because humanity lacks the energy and knowledge to propel itself to that next level of evolution (the spiritual integration of all that is), Christ came to give us the way, teach us what is true from what the world says is true, and lead a life respecting our human nature. This leap from the physical and mental realities to the deeper penetrations of what humanity will become accompanies any space travelers, as well as any sentient being anywhere. If pioneers go to Mars, they are still subject to those invisible tugs between good and evil (See Genesis 1-2).
A NON-CONCLUSION
I believe all of us need to look at who we are right now to see what we would become if we colonized Mars.
There are no cures for original sin, only the tools to help us struggle with those forces that tear at our humanity in ways we cannot see.
When we say, “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior,” we acknowledge that a power greater than human needs to sustain us now (or on Mars) to fulfill the destiny and intelligent progression of humanity, despite all the false prophets and their ways that bid us to feel good.
The cross is the badge of honor, like the white cap of the Foreign Legion. Like the Legion, we don’t get the prize without obstacles (original sin) and fighting the enemy (Satan and his Legions). Those baptized are tattooed with the cross on their souls. It is not without significance that all our prayers begin with, “In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
I don’t have solutions to the variable of original sin, as it impacts space travel. I don’t have solutions where I totally clear the slate of all temptations to have false gods before me while I live. What I do have is the cross and its power to move me to that next level of my evolution, one which allows me to not get rid of original sin and its effects, but to survive with an energy that is not my own.
